Project Title: Development of Bio-Mimetic Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (BAUV) for Maritime Surveillance (Phase I)(MVS),

Qualifications: B.Tech/ equivalent in Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture/ Mechanical/ Production/ Industrial/ Aerospace Engineering. with valid GATE/NET score. OR M.Tech/ equivalent in Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture/ Mechanical/ Production/ Industrial/ Aerospace Engineering. Applicant must have a qualified GATE score.

The candidates should have good academic track record with all through first class and at least 60% marks in B.E./ B.Tech. and M.E./ M.Tech. degrees.

Relevant Experience: The proposed project on Biomemetic Autonomous Underwater Vehicle is a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional one, where the inputs from researchers in different associated areas are required for its fructification. Research teams from IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur and IISc Bangalore are joining together and contributing to the project from their area of expertise. The different disciplines are widely divided as Hydrodynamics; Materials and Structure; Electronics and Controls; Communication, Navigation, Surveillance and Tracking; and System Design and Integration. 

The project is planned to be undertaken in a phased manner, where the first phase (duration of 4 years) will concentrate on the development of a two robotic prototype fishes with sensors and other systems enabling them with autonomous underwater operation, and the second phase (duration of another 4 years) will aim to build a swarm of robotic fishes with proper communication and coordination capability to accomplish an assigned mission. 

IIT Kharagpur is contributing on hydrodynamics, propulsion and control aspects of the system, including assembling a prototype for testing in the laboratory for propulsion, control and navigation. The project will aim to develop two BAUV units of test bed prototype size and subject them to detailed study to acquire the know how required to take it to the product level. These prototypes will be studied extensively in laboratory conditions to understand and evaluate their performance in various aspects, improve and fine tune them to take to the next phase.

Post-1: Good background in fluid mechanics and hydrodynamics is desired. Strong working knowledge of CAD-CAM, Matlab and CFD software is essential. Experience in projects involving fabrication of models, experimental work in industry/ academic research will be given preference.

Post-2: One of the aims of the project is to study the effect of hydrodynamics parameters in optimizing the propulsion of the BAUV. For this a working knowledge of fluid mechanics and CFD modeling is a plus. 

M.Tech in Ocean Engineering/ Aerospace/ Mechanical Engg. preferred. Good background in fluid mechanics and modeling using any software is desired. Strong working knowledge of Matlab, Ansys-Fluent/ STARCCM+ is desired and will be given preference.

Post-3: A digital prototype and a robotic model of the prototype will be built in the lab. This needs a strong background in mathematical modelling and control of physical systems. The application being underwater robotics exposure (and skills in) to kinematics, dynamics, sensors, instrumentation and control in areas related mechanical, manufacturing automation, automotive, aerospace, marine is expected. Since the robot will have to be assembled and integrated as well any practical experience in mechatronics, robotics, embedded systems and software at UG/PG level will be desirable. All selected candidates for the project can get a chance to pursue MS/PhD based on qualification / experience. Candidates with 2 or more years experience and having research publications will be given preference.
